In 1740’s, the Scottish naval surgeon James Lind observed that citrus fruits, which are naturally rich in vitamin C, played a vital role in keeping the sailors gums healthy. A diet of citrus fruits (lemons and limes) was subsequently adopted by the British Royal Navy on extended sea voyages - leading to the nickname “limey” for sailors. Rose Hips are the fruit of a rose that develop after the petals have fallen. During World War II when imports of citrus products were limited, rose hips became especially popular in Great Britain to ensure vitamin C intake. Rose hips are one of the richest natural sources of bioflavonoids and vitamin C, having a much higher content than citrus fruits.
