Pregnancy is a demanding time nutritionally on a woman’s body, a healthy prenatal nutrition is all about eating well, not necessarily eating for two, to ensure the well-being of the mother and the developing baby. A variety of foods is key, the diet should include lots of high-quality fuel foods, including fresh fruits and vegetables; whole grain breads, cereals and pastas; low-fat dairy products; and foods high in protein, such as fish, eggs, lean meat, poultry and pulses. It is also important to get adequate fluids, especially water. It is recommended to avoid alcohol; foods with added sugar and salt; high fat, processed and refined foods; unpasteurised dairy products; rare or raw meat; and fish at the top of the food chain such as swordfish, shark and king mackerel. Pregnant women need more of some nutrients, such as folic acid, iron and vitamin C, and may benefit from taking a prenatal multivitamin to support their nutrient levels.
