Neem is a member of the Meliaceae plant family and has many common names, including Indian lilac, limba, margosa, nim, nimba and vempu. According to Hindu mythology, its beneficial properties were attributed to the fact that a few drops of “amrita” (ambrosia or immortal nectar) fell upon the tree when being carried to heaven. The ancient Hindus also believed that planting neem trees ensured a passage to heaven. In Sanskrit, the ancient classical language of India, neem is translated as “nimba” and becomes the basis of an ancient saying “nimbati ivasthyamdadati”, meaning “bestower of good health”.
The beneficial properties of neem have been documented for more than 5000 years in ancient Indian and its uses are so varied that the tree is often called the “village pharmacy” of South Asia. Almost every part of the neem tree is bitter and finds application in indigenous herbal use. This formulation has been synergistically formulated with artemesia, black walnut and grapefruit.
