FREE RADICALS

Free radicals are highly reactive particles produced by the body either as a by-product of a reaction or during normal biochemical processes, such as enzyme activation. Under normal circumstances the body is capable of neutralising these particles and maintains them at a safe minimum level. Free radicals have at least one unpaired negatively charged electron which can readily combine with other molecules or atoms. Excess or abnormal formation of free radicals is potentially dangerous and can lead oxidation and even irreversible damage of body tissue. Oxidation of cells damages its genetic code and can produce errors in cell function, replication and protein synthesis, which can lead to an auto-immune response where the body's immune system destroys its own cells as they are unrecognisable. Excess levels of free radicals in the body is linked to the ageing process and many diseases, particularly degenerative conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and arthritis. Many external factors also generate high levels of free radicals such as alcohol consumption, smoking, stress, strenuous physical activity, eating processed and fried foods and excessive exposure to environmental pollution and radiation, including sunlight.

ANTIOXIDANTS

An antioxidant acts a free radical scavenger and neutralises these reactive particles by binding to their free electrons. By destroying free radicals, antioxidants help to detoxify and protect vital body tissues and organs. Antioxidants come in the form of enzymes, hormones, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, extensive research indicates that antioxidants inhibit and control free radical damage.

BODY ENZYMES & HORMONES

Various vitamins play a crucial role in the production of antioxidant enzymes in the body, such as specific B Vitamins. VITAMIN C

Vitamin C has powerful antioxidant properties and prevents oxidation of Vitamins A and E. TUMERIC ROOT
