Every summer millions of Brits have difficulty sleeping due to overheating in bed at night. But a new personal cooling device could prove to be the solution. According to new research issued recently, four out of five Brits suffer disrupted sleep as they repeatedly turn their warm pillow over in search of a cool spot.
The research found that 80% of Brits flip their pillows in bed at night with 37% saying they flip their pillows frequently.
The research also revealed that pillow flipping is not a gender issue. 81% of men and 78% of women admitted to pillow flipping. And when it comes to age, while the 25-34 year old age group showed the highest propensity (54% said they always or frequently flip their pillows compared to 43% of 55-64 year olds) overall being too hot in bed affects the young and old alike.
Sleep Expert, Dr Neil Stanley, said: “Sleep is a biological necessity and good sleep is essential to good physical, mental and emotional health. During the night the body needs to lose heat in order to sleep and this is done mainly through the head and face. However if the bedroom, bed or pillow is too hot then the body may not be able to sufficiently cool itself and sleep can be disrupted.”
However relief for the estimated 30 million Brits who do flip the pillow is now available in the form of the Chillow®
The Chillow is a thin, cushioned pad (made from medical-grade, hypoallergenic, non-toxic materials) that lies on top of a normal pillow (or inside the pillowcase) to take heat away from the body and keep the user cool throughout the night.
Like many great inventions, the Chillow is remarkably simple. It works on the principle that water conducts heat away from the body 25 times faster than air - which is why people feel cold when they come out of a swimming pool.
The patented internal core absorbs ordinary, natural tap water which, unlike pillows and duvets that trap body heat, takes heat from the body then dissipates it into the air in the same way that a car radiator keeps an engine cool.
Dr Stanley added: “A cool pillow can help the body lose heat, and thereby induce sleep, it does so without disturbing one’s partner. Other methods of keeping cool in bed - opening the window, throwing off the duvet, using a fan, etc. – may drive one’s partner out of the bed altogether.”
As well as helping to induce sleep, the Chillow also provides soothing relief from fever, aches and pains, hot flushes, injury and irritating skin conditions such as sunburn and acne. It is particularly beneficial within oncology where cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy suffer from severe overheating. The Chillow provides them with instant, non-evasive relief.
